# Types of promo codes and how to read their terms

## What kinds of promo codes are there, and how do you know which one you have?

Promo codes come in four main kinds: an instant cut from the total, either a percentage or a fixed amount in SAR; cashback that returns to your store account after the order; free delivery; and a gift added to your order. Checkout tells you which one you have: if the total drops, it is an instant cut, and if the total stays the same while the store says the code was accepted, it is usually cashback. Before you pay, read the terms for the minimum order, the cap on the saving, excluded products and the end date.

## Key points

- An instant cut shows at checkout before you pay; cashback reaches you after the order as credit with the store.
- A percentage grows with your cart while a fixed amount stays the same, so work out both on your cart and pick the bigger saving.
- Most noon codes are cashback credited to your noon balance after delivery, while Nice One, Styli and Sephora codes come off at once.
- Sephora, iHerb and Styli take a single code per order.
- Every code card on Couponatcom shows who the code is for, its end date when known and the day we last checked it.

## What kinds of promo codes will you find at Saudi stores?

Every promo code promises a saving. The saving reaches you in different ways, though, and each way changes what you pay today in its own way. These are the common kinds:

- Instant cut: taken off the total in the cart or at checkout, so you see the new amount before you pay. It is either a percentage of the total or a fixed amount in SAR.
- Cashback: you pay the full amount, then part of it comes back as credit in your account with the store, to spend on a later order.
- Free delivery: removes the delivery fee and leaves the product prices as they are.
- Gift with the order: does not lower the price but adds a product to your order.

Know a code's kind before you compare it with another. Cashback is not worth the same as an instant cut of the same size if you won't order from that store again.

## The code type at each of our stores

| Store | Code type | Best code now |
| --------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| [noon](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/noon/) | Cashback in most cases, which shows up in your noon balance once the order reaches you | [CHI](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/noon/) |
| [Namshi](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/namshi/) | Mostly an instant cut shown in the order summary; certain offers pay cashback instead | [MUT](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/namshi/) |
| [Nice One](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/niceone/) | Comes straight off your order at checkout; it does not cover marked-down products | [T31](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/niceone/) |
| [Styli](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/styli/) | An instant discount, either a percentage or a set amount, and no more than one code per order | [AXA](https://couponatcom.com/en/sa/styli/) |

## Which saves more: a percentage off or a fixed amount in SAR?

It depends on your cart total. A percentage grows with the cart, so the more you spend, the more you save. A fixed amount stays the same, which makes it the better choice when your cart is small.

The sum is simple: multiply your cart total by the percentage, then compare the result with the fixed amount. Whichever is bigger saves you more on this order, and the answer may flip on the next one. Styli, for example, has codes of both kinds: a percentage of the total, or a fixed sum deducted from it.

Watch for the cap. Some percentage codes stop at a set amount however big the cart gets. Some Namshi codes set the largest amount they will take off, and Mumzworld's terms cap a code's discount at SAR 75, even if the code's own wording is silent on it.

If you hold two codes, one a percentage and one a fixed amount, try each one on its own in the cart and keep the one that leaves the lower total.

## How does a cashback code work, and when does the money arrive?

With cashback, the total does not drop at checkout. You pay the full price, then part of it comes back as credit in your account with the store. You spend that credit on a later order; it does not usually come back as cash.

Most noon codes work this way. At checkout noon tells you the code went through, the total does not move, and the amount lands in your noon balance after you receive the order. Namshi runs some cashback offers too, and that money can't be withdrawn as cash or moved to another person's account. ToYou has offers that cut the bill and others that pay cashback, and its wallet credit expires after a set time.

So if you want to pay less today, an instant cut suits you better. If you will order from the same store again soon, cashback works fine, as long as you spend the credit before it expires.

## Free delivery codes and gift codes: when do they help?

A free delivery code only removes the shipping fee. It helps when your cart is below the amount at which the store delivers for free anyway. Once you pass that amount, it saves you nothing, and a code that cuts the price is the better pick.

A gift code puts an extra product in your order without lowering what you pay. Sephora has codes like this, and the conditions of each offer appear beside it. The code may be refused when the gift has run out, or when you choose a delivery method that gifts do not cover, such as express delivery, same-day delivery or store pickup.

Ask yourself before you choose: do you really need the gift? If not, a cut in the price serves you better.

## Is the code for a first order or for everyone?

This question is separate from the kind of saving. A code can be an instant cut or cashback and still be limited to people ordering for the first time, or meant for returning customers, or open to everyone.

noon and Namshi have codes the store refuses if your account already has past orders, and some Styli codes work only on your very first order. That is why every code card on Couponatcom carries one of three labels: "First order", "Returning customers" or "Everyone". Read it before you copy the code.

## How do you read a promo code's terms before you pay?

A code's terms are usually short, yet they decide whether you save or not. Look for these points:

- Who it is for: a first order, returning customers or everyone.
- Minimum order: the lowest total at which the store accepts the code. At iHerb, products from brands excluded from promotions are not counted toward it.
- Cap on the saving: the most the code will take off; past it the discount stops growing, however big the cart.
- Excluded products: sections or brands the code does not cover. Styli codes leave out cosmetics and school items, and Mumzworld codes leave out gift cards, milk and diapers.
- Items already reduced: some stores do not apply the code to them. At Nice One, for example, the code comes off the rest of the cart only.
- End date: after it the code stops working. On Couponatcom an expired code leaves the live list on its end date and shows, struck through, at the bottom of the store page.
- Codes per order: Sephora, iHerb and Styli take just one code, so use the one that saves the most.

If the terms do not mention something, do not assume it is allowed. Check it at checkout.

## How can you tell at checkout which kind of code you got?

Once you type the code and press apply, look at three things: the store's message under the code box, the total, and the discount line in the order summary. Then go through these steps:

1. Read the store's message. If it says the code is invalid, the code was not accepted at all, so move on to the reasons a code is refused.
2. Compare the total before and after the code. If it dropped, it is an instant cut, and you will usually see a line showing the discount.
3. If the total did not move and the store says the code went through, it is most likely cashback. Check the balance in your account after delivery.
4. If only the delivery fee went down, it is a free delivery code.
5. If an extra item with no price appeared in the cart, it is a gift code.
6. If the saving is smaller than you expected, check the cap and the excluded products in the terms.

Make sure the discount shows before you press pay. Mumzworld, for example, will not apply the discount once you have paid with a wrong code.

## Questions and answers

In most cases, no. Sephora, iHerb and Styli accept one code per order. At Nice One, the code can't be combined with another discount such as a bank card offer. If you have more than one code, try each on its own and keep the one that gives the lowest total.

Not necessarily. The amount can be the same; the difference is in timing and how you spend it. An instant discount lowers what you pay now, while cashback reaches you as credit that you can only spend on a later order at the same store.

Usually for one of two reasons: the code has a cap, or your cart holds excluded or already reduced items. At Styli, an item already on sale may get a lower discount than a full-price one.

Not always. Namshi has codes that belong to its app and do not work when you order in a browser. Read the terms, and if they mention the app, order there.

It means we tried the code at the store's checkout, or the store or the affiliate programme that runs its codes confirmed it to us. Next to it you see "Checked on" with the day of our latest check. The store's checkout still has the final word.
